A clinician may use the clock task alone or as part of another screening tool. The clinician scores the result using a defined method rather than judging whether the drawing looks artistic. Clock drawing can detect signs associated with dementia, but its accuracy depends partly on the scoring system. Who should consider an assessment?

An assessment makes sense when the individual, a family member, or a clinician notices cognitive change. For community-dwelling adults aged 65 and older without recognized symptoms, the USPSTF found insufficient evidence to determine whether routine screening's benefits outweigh its harms.

What can an abnormal result mean?

An abnormal clock drawing does not point only to Alzheimer's. Possible explanations include medication effects, depression, infection, endocrine or metabolic problems, vitamin deficiency, sleep disorders, stroke, or another dementia, according to the National Institute on Aging's diagnosis overview.

The appropriate next step is a fuller medical, neurologic, and neuropsychological evaluation. That process looks for the cause instead of treating one drawing as a diagnosis. Depending on the result, follow-up may lead to:.
