Why averages cannot predict one person's timeline

Survival estimates depend partly on when researchers start counting. A study measuring from the first symptoms will produce a different figure from one measuring from diagnosis. A 2025 analysis covering all dementia types found median survival of 4.8 years after an incident diagnosis.

A separate analysis of 12 dementia studies linked higher mortality with male sex, diabetes, smoking history, coronary heart disease, and heart failure.

These conditions can compound the blood-vessel problems already involved in vascular dementia. Associations are not necessarily causes. For example, institutional care or a longer medication list may reflect more complex illness rather than independently shortening life. These findings should not be used as a reason to stop prescribed medicine.

Can managing vascular risks change the outlook?

No treatment reverses established dementia. However, managing cardiovascular risks can help prevent additional strokes and brain damage, which makes risk reduction relevant even after diagnosis.
