The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says curcumin trials for Alzheimer's disease are few, limited, and inconsistent. Its review of supplements and cognitive function concludes that researchers cannot determine whether curcumin provides a benefit. That uncertainty applies even more strongly to turmeric shots.
A claim about curcumin does not automatically support a drink containing turmeric, because the product, dose, formulation, and study population may differ. NCCIH also says it is not possible to conclude definitively that turmeric or curcumin benefits any health condition. That is a stronger caution than saying researchers simply need to determine the best dose.
Why the promising memory study does not prove shots work
One small randomized trial followed 40 adults aged 51 to 84 who did not have dementia. Participants taking Theracurmin, a specific bioavailable product at 90 milligrams twice daily, showed improvements in memory and attention over 18 months, according to the study in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. The result is interesting but narrow.
It cannot establish that turmeric shots provide the same effects, and it does not show that curcumin treats diagnosed dementia. A separate 24-week randomized trial tested standard curcumin in people with Alzheimer's disease. The study found no clinical or biomarker benefit over placebo, while three curcumin participants withdrew because of gastrointestinal symptoms.
Why absorption changes the comparison
Oral curcumin absorption varies substantially by formulation. NCCIH notes that products contain different amounts of curcumin and may include piperine, a black-pepper component commonly added to increase bioavailability. In one pharmacokinetic trial, a proprietary micromicellar formula produced 522 times greater curcumin exposure per milligram than standard 95% curcumin powder.
The formulation comparison published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition shows why the words "turmeric shot" reveal little about the absorbed dose. When comparing a shot with a research product, check: Even a product designed for better absorption has not thereby proved that it improves memory. Greater exposure can also affect safety.

What are the safety concerns?
At recommended amounts, conventional oral turmeric or curcumin is likely safe for up to two or three months. Possible side effects include nausea, reflux, stomach upset, diarrhea, and constipation. Enhanced-bioavailability products have been associated with rare but sometimes severe liver injury.
Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration had received 18 reports involving liver problems by June 2023, including two severe cases and one death, according to its turmeric and curcumin safety alert.
