What does a proprietary-blend label reveal?
Under U.S. rules, a proprietary blend can list its combined weight and ingredients in descending order by weight. The manufacturer generally need not reveal each amount for "other dietary ingredients" within the blend, including phosphatidylserine, according to the FDA's dietary supplement labeling guide.
Ingredients outside the blend must have individually stated amounts. Nutrients with established daily Values also require separate disclosure, so the exception does not make every dose on the label optional. Suppose a label lists a 600-milligram blend containing three ingredients. Their order indicates relative weight, but it does not reveal whether the first contributes 400 milligrams or only slightly more than the second.
Why research doses cannot fill the gap
Ingredient research usually concerns a defined dose, extract, and study population. A blend's total weight cannot show whether one component matches the amount tested. ginkgo illustrates the problem.
NCCIH reports no conclusive evidence that ginkgo prevents or slows cognitive decline, while dementia-study results varied across extracts and doses of 120 to 240 milligrams daily. The NIH-funded GEM trial tested 240 milligrams daily and found no reduction in the development of dementia or Alzheimer's disease, as described in the NCCIH summary of the GEM study. Even a known research dose does not guarantee benefit; an undisclosed dose supports an even weaker comparison.
Hidden doses and inaccurate labels are different problems
Dose opacity concerns information omitted legally from a proprietary-blend label. Label inaccuracy means a product does not contain the stated amount, which requires separate testing rather than an assumption based on the blend format. In 2018, GAO found that one multi-ingredient memory supplement contained less phosphatidylserine than its 100-milligram claim. It also contained about half the stated amount of a measured ginkgo constituent, according to the GAO's memory-supplement testing report.
That finding was limited. GAO tested only three of seven listed ingredients and said FDA—not GAO—determines whether results meet the legal definition of adulteration. NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements also notes that FDA does not approve supplements for safety or effectiveness before marketing. Manufacturers remain responsible for identity, purity, strength, and composition, but a proprietary-blend label is not premarket proof of efficacy or exact content.
Why undisclosed doses complicate medication review
Supplements can affect how a medicine is absorbed, metabolized, or removed from the body. The FDA therefore advises discussing every supplement and its doses with a health professional in its medication-and-supplement warning.
A proprietary blend makes that discussion less precise because the label cannot supply every dose. This matters to anyone taking medication, including people with memory problems whose caregivers help manage products and prescriptions.
How to evaluate a memory supplement
Read the entire Supplement Facts panel before relying on an ingredient named on the front. A familiar ingredient does not show that the product supplies a studied amount. If the manufacturer will not disclose the individual amounts, treat the research-dose comparison as unresolved rather than estimating doses from the ingredient order.
