Who may use the MoCA?
MoCA Cognition's Terms of Use state that full access to restricted services—including downloading, administering, scoring, or interpreting the MoCA—requires an account. Those services are intended for qualified health professionals, academics, researchers, or medical-research personnel. For families and caregivers, that means downloading a form is not a substitute for arranging a qualified assessment.
A score also needs context, including the form used and the limits of a screening result. The MoCA is copyrighted and is not a stand-alone diagnostic test. MoCA Cognition says appropriately qualified healthcare professionals should interpret it under applicable professional standards and training requirements.
Is certification required?
The published guidance contains an important inconsistency. MoCA Cognition's December 2025 FAQ says certification is optional when a healthcare professional uses only the total score for screening, triage, or referral. Under that policy, certification is required when the user interprets individual tasks, sub-scores, or impairments in particular cognitive domains.
This distinction separates basic total-score screening from more detailed clinical interpretation. However, the Terms of Use say training and certification are mandatory for paper-MoCA administration and scoring, unless certification is unavailable in the user's language. Because the documents do not fully align, professionals should confirm the applicable requirement with MoCA Cognition before administering or scoring a specific form.
Can the PDF be shared or posted online?
MoCA Cognition's permission guidance allows certain clinical and educational users at universities, foundations, hospitals, clinics, and public-health institutes to use, reproduce, and distribute the test without permission when the activity is not commercially funded. Commercial or pharmaceutical funding requires written permission and a licensing agreement.
That permission does not allow unrestricted web publication. MoCA Cognition prohibits posting the test or its instructions on websites, and publication in books, newspapers, magazines, or electronic articles requires permission.
