How Do an Alzheimer’s Blood Test, PET Scan and Spinal Tap Compare for Accuracy?

Accuracy depends on what is being measured and which particular test is used. Amyloid PET uses a radioactive tracer to reveal the distribution of amyloid plaques in the brain. Anti-amyloid therapies are intended for selected people in early symptomatic stages who have confirmed amyloid pathology. A practical question is, “What decision will this result help us make?” For one patient, a negative blood test may redirect attention toward sleep apnea, medication effects or vascular disease.
