Why I hydrate more than I train

When it comes to fitness and training, many people focus on how hard they push themselves in the gym or on the field. But for me, hydrating more than I train is a game-changer. Here’s why drinking plenty of water matters even more than just sweating it out.

First off, our bodies are mostly water—about 60%. When you exercise, you lose a lot of that through sweat and breathing. If you don’t replace those fluids, your blood thickens and can’t carry oxygen as efficiently to your muscles. That means your muscles get tired faster because they aren’t getting what they need to keep going strong.

Water also helps keep your joints lubricated so they move smoothly without pain or stiffness. When dehydrated, joints can feel tight or sore, making workouts harder and increasing injury risk.

Another big reason is temperature control. When we work out hard, our body heats up and starts sweating to cool down. Without enough water in the system, this cooling process doesn’t work well — which can lead to overheating or heat-related illnesses.

Hydration isn’t just about avoiding problems; it actually boosts performance too. Even losing a small amount of fluid—like 2% of your body weight—can make you weaker and less enduring during exercise. Drinking enough fluids keeps muscle contractions strong and helps deliver nutrients where they’re needed most during training sessions.

Plus, staying hydrated helps flush toxins from the body after tough workouts so recovery happens faster with less soreness.

So while training builds strength and skill, hydration fuels that effort by keeping everything running smoothly inside your body—from muscle function to joint health to temperature regulation. For me personally, focusing on drinking plenty of water every day means I get more out of every workout session without hitting walls early or risking injury.

In short: I hydrate more than I train because my body performs better when fully fueled with fluids—and that makes all the difference between good workouts and great ones.
