Why Sadness Became a Medical Condition

Sadness is something everyone experiences at times. It’s a natural feeling that comes and goes, usually in response to life’s ups and downs. But over centuries, sadness transformed from just an emotion into something doctors began to see as a medical condition. How did this happen?

Long ago, during the time of ancient Greek medicine, sadness wasn’t just seen as a mood but also as a sign of illness. Doctors back then believed in the idea of “humors,” which were fluids inside the body that affected health and emotions. One humor called black bile was thought to cause both sadness and a condition called melancholia—a deep, serious kind of sorrow that could even lead to death. Because sadness was closely linked with melancholia, it was treated almost like a disease itself.

These early physicians thought sadness had real physical effects on the body. They believed it could harm organs—especially the heart—by making it shrink or weaken due to too much black bile inside you. This idea wasn’t limited to medicine; it spread into philosophy, religion, and even stories about love during medieval times and beyond.

As time went on and medical science advanced, people began distinguishing normal sadness from more serious conditions like depression. Depression is now understood as a chronic mood disorder where feelings of deep sadness last for weeks or months without clear reasons—and it affects how someone functions daily.

Still today, we recognize that while feeling sad is part of being human, when those feelings become overwhelming or persistent enough to interfere with life, they can be signs of an illness needing treatment.

So why did sadness become considered medical? It started because ancient thinkers saw emotional pain not just in our minds but also tied deeply to our bodies’ health—especially through ideas like black bile harming the heart—and this view shaped how we understand mental health even now.
