Oolong Tea for Memory Loss: What Human Dementia Research Actually Shows

See why tea associations do not prove that oolong prevents dementia—and when memory changes require assessment.

Human research has not shown that oolong tea treats memory loss or prevents dementia. Oolong is one tea category studied alongside black and green tea, but no randomized oolong trial has demonstrated a benefit in people with dementia. Some observational studies link tea drinking with better cognitive outcomes. However, the National Institute on Aging says current diet research does not establish that any particular food or supplement prevents Alzheimer's disease or other age-related cognitive decline in its evidence overview.

What did the human studies find?

A 2008 Singapore study followed Chinese adults aged 55 and older. Among 2,501 participants, black-or-oolong drinkers had lower adjusted odds of cognitive impairment than non-tea drinkers. The reported odds ratio was 0.55.

Among 1,438 participants initially without impairment, black-or-oolong drinking was also associated with lower odds of cognitive decline over one to two years. The odds ratio was 0.69, according to the study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. A separate 2010 Singapore study found associations between black-or-oolong and green tea consumption and better performance across several cognitive areas. These included memory, executive function, processing speed, and overall cognition.

Why these findings do not prove an oolong benefit

The key 2008 comparison combined black and oolong tea. Researchers therefore could not tell whether oolong, black tea, or another characteristic of tea drinkers explained the association. These studies were observational.

Participants chose whether to drink tea, rather than being randomly assigned to oolong or a comparison drink. Differences in health, habits, or lifestyle could have influenced both tea use and cognitive performance. The 2010 study measured tea consumption and cognition at one point. That design cannot determine whether tea drinking came before better cognition—or whether people with better cognition were more likely to maintain certain habits.

Is there newer or broader evidence?

A 2022 study followed 1,545 cognitively normal older Chinese adults for one year. Tea drinkers experienced less cognitive decline overall, but the finding did not differ by tea type. Only 20 tea drinkers reported oolong consumption, leaving too little oolong-specific evidence for a dependable conclusion in the Frontiers in Nutrition study. A systematic review and meta-analysis also found lower pooled risks of cognitive disorders among higher tea consumers.

However, the tea-type findings concerned green and black tea, and the evidence quality was low to moderate. It did not establish an oolong-specific dementia benefit. Taken together, the human evidence supports further research into tea consumption. It does not support prescribing oolong for memory loss, claiming that it prevents dementia, or treating an association as proof of cause and effect.

What about promising laboratory research?

In APP/PS1 mice, an animal model used in Alzheimer's research, Tieguanyin oolong extracts improved maze and recognition performance. Researchers also reported changes in inflammatory and amyloid-related measures. Those results show what happened in a specific mouse model under laboratory conditions.

They cannot tell readers whether drinking oolong improves memory, slows dementia, or produces comparable biological effects in humans. A meaningful clinical test would need to assign people to an oolong intervention or a suitable comparison and track cognitive outcomes. The available research described here does not include such a randomized oolong trial in people with dementia.

What should someone with memory changes do?

Oolong tea should not replace a clinical assessment for noticeable new memory or thinking problems.
