LatAm-FINGERS found structured lifestyle coaching improved global cognition 55% more than general health advice over two years. For people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), where memory or thinking changes are noticeable but daily function remains, it offers a practical routine of exercise, diet, brain training, vascular checks and peer support. The trial enrolled 1,065 adults ages 60-77 at elevated dementia risk at 12 sites in 11 Latin American countries, according to the UT Health San Antonio trial summary. Results were presented at AAIC 2026 in London on July 13, 2026 and published in The Lancet, according to Medscape in its Medscape AAIC 2026 report.

What made coaching different from general advice?
Structured participants received hands-on coaching across five linked habits. The comparison group received four one-hour general advice sessions over two years. The coaching group attended 38 group meetings over two years for peer support and accountability, according to Medicine Central in its Medicine Central program breakdown.
That regular contact helped people stay with exercise, meals, training and health checks. Both groups improved cognition during the trial. The coached group improved more, with the largest advantage in episodic memory, or recall of recent events and experiences.
How do you copy the exercise and eating steps?
Supervised exercise was scheduled four days each week. Sessions combined aerobic activity, resistance work, coordination and balance training. Unsupervised walks alone do not match this formula.
Ask a clinician, physical therapist or community program for a supervised plan that mixes those four types safely. Start with current ability and build steadily. Diet counseling followed the MIND diet, which blends Mediterranean-DASH principles. Participants also had dietitian review every six months for practical meal adaptation.
What brain training and health checks were used?
Coaching included weekly computerized training on processing speed, attention, memory and executive function. Executive function covers planning, focus and switching between tasks.
Vascular monitoring tracked blood pressure, weight, glucose, HbA1c and lipids every six months. Those numbers affect brain blood flow and daily energy. Useful habits from this pattern include:.
- schedule brain training on the same day each week
- bring blood pressure, weight, glucose, HbA1c and lipid results to each visit
- ask what one small change would help most before the next check
- invite a family member to track appointments and progress
What should people with MCI expect?
Expect gradual change in test-like skills, not a quick fix. Both basic advice and full coaching helped, but coaching helped more. For MCI, the memory result matters most.
Better episodic memory can support names, appointments, medication steps and recent conversations. Pair training with written routines, pill organizers and consistent sleep times. The trial measured cognitive test-score change over two years in at-risk adults without dementia and tested five parts together, according to Medical Daily in its Medical Daily trial analysis. It does not prove dementia prevention or show which single step mattered most.
