The Alzheimer's Association launched $100 million PROTECT-Cog to test lifestyle coaching plus a metabolism drug for dementia prevention. Announced July 13, 2026, in London, it targets at-risk adults without dementia and points adults with memory concerns toward structured lifestyle first.
PROTECT-Cog means Prevention of Risk fOr cogniTive dEcline through Combined Therapy. A GLP-1 agonist is a metabolism-targeting drug type studied for blood sugar, weight, and related risks. The Alzheimer's Association says the trial combines that drug approach with a structured multidomain lifestyle program the Alzheimer's Association announcement.

What does PROTECT-Cog actually test?
PROTECT-Cog tests structured lifestyle coaching alone and together with a GLP-1 agonist or similar metabolism-targeting drug. The lifestyle part is organized and coached, not general wellness advice. The drug part targets metabolic pathways that may influence brain risk.
The goal is prevention: slower cognitive decline and fewer cases of mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Participants are at-risk older adults without diagnosed dementia. Effects will be tracked over years, so this is a long prevention experiment rather than a short treatment trial.
Why build on POINTER and FINGER?
PROTECT-Cog builds directly on U.S. POINTER, LatAm-FINGERS, and the original Finnish FINGER trial. Those studies established lifestyle-based risk reduction as worth testing at larger scale. The new trial adds a metabolism drug to that foundation.
U.S. POINTER was a two-year multisite trial reported July 28, 2025. The Alzheimer's Association reported that both lifestyle interventions improved cognition in at-risk older adults, with structured support showing greater global-cognition benefit the U.S. POINTER results notice.
Does a GLP-1 drug prevent dementia now?
No. PROTECT-Cog is designed to provide the first rigorous prospective test of adding a GLP-1-type drug to lifestyle coaching in presymptomatic at-risk adults, Tech Times reports the Tech Times report. That question is still being tested. A prevention trial in people without dementia is different from treating diagnosed disease.
The distinction matters because Novo Nordisk reported Nov. 24, 2025 that oral semaglutide failed to significantly slow progression in 3,808 adults with early symptomatic Alzheimer's the Novo Nordisk trial update. Early Alzheimer's treatment and at-risk prevention involve different people, timing, and goals. Do not assume a prevention benefit from treatment news, positive or negative.
What should you do if you are worried about memory?
Prioritize proven structured lifestyle measures while drug prevention remains unproven. Ask your clinician for a memory evaluation, a review of sleep, mood, medications, blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol, and a referral to a structured lifestyle or brain-health program where available.
Bring a list of symptoms, family history, and all prescriptions and supplements. Do not seek off-label GLP-1 prescribing for brain protection. Discuss benefits and risks with a clinician and keep follow-up visits to track memory, function, and side effects.
- Ask what structured exercise, nutrition, cognitive, sleep, and vascular-risk support fits you
- Ask how your metabolic health affects brain risk
- Ask about GLP-1 benefits and risks for your conditions, not for off-label brain protection
- Ask what local prevention studies or memory clinics accept new patients
