Movement Changes in Dementia Explained

Movement Changes in Dementia Explained

Dementia affects more than just memory. It often changes how people move their bodies as the disease progresses. These shifts can start small and grow over time, making daily tasks harder.

In many types of dementia, movement problems appear early or in later stages. For example, people with vascular dementia or dementia with Lewy bodies might notice balance issues or slower steps right away. They could shuffle their feet, have trouble walking steadily, or feel unsteady on their feet. This raises the risk of falls.

Lewy body dementia brings Parkinson-like signs such as tremors, stiff muscles, and rigid movements. Alertness can fluctuate, and some face sleep issues or fainting spells that lead to more falls. Frontotemporal dementia, or FTD, usually starts with behavior changes but adds motor troubles later. In advanced stages like stage 5 or 6, balance and coordination fade. People struggle with everyday actions, face swallowing difficulties, or show muscle weakness.

Even facial movements can hint at dementia. Studies show those with the condition have subtler, slower expressions around the eyes and mouth. Smiles happen less, and responses feel rigid. These micro-changes are hard to spot without tools but tie to how dementia impacts motor control and emotions.

Alzheimer’s progresses slower, but movement issues still emerge. Posture might stoop, steps slow, or coordination slip. Rapidly progressive dementia hits fast, with sudden coordination loss, tremors, or weakness in weeks or months.

Swallowing problems, called dysphagia, affect many in later stages. This leads to risks like choking or poor nutrition. Bladder control can also weaken, adding to physical challenges.

These changes vary by dementia type and person. Early signs like slower movements or balance shifts help spot issues. Care involves aids like walkers, therapy for swallowing, or home changes to prevent falls. Doctors watch for these to adjust support.
