Does depression in seniors increase dementia likelihood?

Does depression in seniors increase the likelihood of dementia? Recent studies show that depression, especially certain symptoms experienced earlier in life like midlife, can raise dementia risk later on, though the strongest links appear in people under 60 with specific signs of depression.

Researchers from University College London tracked over 5,800 adults starting in their mid-40s for more than 20 years. They found that people reporting five or more depressive symptoms in midlife faced a 27 percent higher chance of developing dementia down the road. This boost in risk came entirely from six key symptoms in those under 60: losing confidence in oneself, struggling to face problems, lacking warmth or affection for others, feeling nervous or strung-up all the time, not feeling satisfied with how one handles tasks, and having trouble concentrating. Loss of self-confidence or difficulty coping with problems each linked to about a 50 percent higher dementia risk on their own.

These findings held up even after checking for other factors like genetics, smoking, drinking, diabetes, or high cholesterol. Other common depression signs, such as sleep issues, low mood, or suicidal thoughts, did not show a clear tie to later dementia.

Why might this happen? Experts suggest these symptoms often lead to pulling away from friends and skipping brain-challenging activities. Less social contact and mental exercise could make the brain more open to dementia damage over time.

The research focuses on midlife depression predicting issues in old age, but it points to watching these symptoms closely in adults as they age. Treating them early might help lower dementia odds, though more studies are needed to confirm how.

Separate work notes that in older adults already showing mild cognitive impairment, apathy combined with depression raises dementia risk further. Physical weakness paired with depression also seems to heighten the chance.
