Difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s disease

Dementia and Alzheimers disease are often confused, but dementia is a general term for a group of symptoms that harm thinking, memory, and daily life, while Alzheimers is a specific brain disease that causes about 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases.

People sometimes use the words interchangeably, but that is not correct. Dementia itself is not a single illness. It describes problems like forgetting recent events, struggling to find words, trouble making decisions, and changes in mood or personality that make everyday tasks hard. These issues come from damage to brain cells and can stem from many causes, such as strokes, infections, or other brain conditions. For example, there are types like vascular dementia, which ties to blood flow problems in the brain, Lewy body dementia with hallucinations and movement issues, and frontotemporal dementia that hits behavior and language first.

Alzheimers disease stands out as one clear cause of dementia. It builds up abnormal proteins in the brain called amyloid plaques and tau tangles. These kill brain cells over time, starting in areas for memory and thinking, then spreading. Early signs match some dementia symptoms, like forgetting new information or getting lost in familiar places. As it worsens, people face bigger confusion about time and place, trouble recognizing loved ones, and needs for help with dressing, eating, or bathing. The disease moves in stages: mild with small forgetfulness, moderate needing more support, and severe with loss of speech, walking, and full care around the clock. It often lasts 8 to 10 years after diagnosis, though some live longer.

Both affect those over 65 most, but younger people can get them too. No cure exists for either, but treatments slow symptoms, and care helps quality of life. Spotting differences matters for right care, as Alzheimers has unique brain changes doctors can check with scans or tests.
