How dementia made me rethink everything I knew about love

Dementia changed everything I thought I knew about love. Before, love felt like a clear, steady thing—shared memories, deep conversations, physical closeness. But when dementia entered our lives, those familiar ways of loving shifted in ways I never expected.

At first, it was confusing and painful. The person I loved began to forget moments we had lived together and sometimes didn’t recognize me. It felt like losing them bit by bit. Yet beneath the surface of memory loss, something else was happening—a different kind of connection started to grow.

Love became less about words or shared history and more about presence and patience. It wasn’t always easy; emotions ran high on both sides as frustration and sadness mixed with tenderness. But slowly I learned that love could be expressed in new forms: a gentle touch on the hand, sitting quietly together without needing to talk, or simply being there through the changes.

The usual ideas of romance—long talks or passionate intimacy—gave way to simpler moments of closeness that still held meaning for us both. Sometimes affection looked like helping with daily tasks or sharing a smile during confusion rather than grand gestures.

Dementia also taught me how fragile identity can be but how resilient feelings are underneath it all. Even when memories fade or moods shift unpredictably, the heart still reaches out for connection and comfort.

This experience made me rethink what it means to truly love someone—not just in good times but through vulnerability and loss too. Love isn’t always perfect or easy; sometimes it’s quiet endurance mixed with hope for small joys amid challenges.

In caring for someone with dementia, you discover new depths of empathy and learn that love adapts—it doesn’t disappear just because things change drastically. It’s found in unexpected places: patience when words fail; kindness despite confusion; holding on even when everything feels uncertain.

So dementia reshaped my understanding: Love is not only about remembering who we were together but also embracing who we are now—even if that looks very different from before—and finding meaning in every shared moment left ahead.
