How to Practice Deep Relaxation

Deep relaxation is a skill anyone can learn, and it’s easier than you might think. When life feels busy or stressful, taking time to relax deeply can help your mind and body feel refreshed. Here’s how you can practice deep relaxation in simple steps.

First, find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed. You can sit comfortably in a chair or lie down on your back—whatever feels best for you. Close your eyes gently and let yourself settle into the moment.

Start by paying attention to your breath. Take slow, deep breaths in through your nose, letting your belly rise as you inhale. Then exhale slowly through either your nose or mouth—whichever feels more natural for you right now. Try counting as you breathe: inhale for four counts, hold for seven counts if that feels comfortable (or just pause briefly), then exhale for eight counts if possible (but don’t worry about being exact). Repeat this cycle a few times until you notice yourself feeling calmer.

Now bring awareness to different parts of your body one by one—this is called a body scan. Start at the tips of your toes and move up slowly: notice any tension in each area and imagine releasing it with each breath out. Let go of tightness in feet, legs, hips, belly, chest, arms, hands… all the way up to the top of your head.

As thoughts come into mind—and they will—just notice them without judgment and gently bring attention back to breathing or scanning through the body again.
