Why is Dad Collecting Leaves?
If you’ve noticed your father with dementia gathering leaves and calling them his savings, you’re not alone. This behavior, while unusual, is actually quite common in people with dementia.
As dementia progresses, it can cause confusion and changes in behavior. Your dad might be trying to make sense of his world in a way that feels familiar to him. Collecting leaves and thinking of them as savings could be his mind’s way of holding onto the concept of saving or gathering resources, even if it’s not happening in a typical way.
Sometimes, people with dementia can develop a condition called “pica,” where they have urges to eat non-food items. While your dad isn’t eating the leaves, this collecting behavior might be related to similar impulses.
It’s also possible that handling and collecting leaves is soothing or comforting for your dad. The texture and act of gathering might provide a sense of purpose or calm.
Remember, your dad isn’t doing this to be difficult. His brain is changing, and this behavior is a symptom of his condition. It’s best to respond with patience and understanding. As long as he’s not eating the leaves or putting himself in danger, it’s usually okay to let him continue this harmless activity.
If you’re worried, talk to his doctor. They can check if there are any underlying issues causing this behavior and suggest ways to manage it. The most important thing is to ensure your dad is safe and as comfortable as possible.
