Why does Mom think her purse is full of money when it’s not?
Dementia can play tricks on the mind, making people believe things that aren’t true. For your mom, her purse might represent security and independence. Even if it’s empty, she may feel comforted thinking it contains money.
This belief could stem from memories of when her purse did hold cash. Dementia often impacts short-term memory first, so older memories can feel very real and present. Your mom may be mentally living in a time when she regularly carried money.
Sometimes, dementia causes paranoia and suspicion. Your mom might worry about theft, so convincing herself she has money could ease those fears. The purse may also symbolize control in a world that’s becoming confusing and unpredictable for her.
It’s usually best not to argue about these beliefs. Trying to convince her otherwise might just upset and frustrate her. Instead, validate her feelings and redirect the conversation to something positive.
You could say “I’m glad you feel secure with your purse, Mom. Hey, remember that time we went shopping together?” This acknowledges her without reinforcing the false belief.
If she insists on spending imaginary money, have a few small bills ready. Let her “pay” with those to avoid embarrassment in public. At home, set up a pretend store where she can safely “shop” with play money.
Make sure to remove any real cash or valuables from her purse to prevent actual loss. Replace them with a few singles so she still feels she has money if she checks.
Remember, this behavior isn’t her fault. It’s the disease causing these beliefs. With patience and understanding, you can help her feel safe and respected despite the challenges of dementia.
