This One Thing Got Me Through Every Scan
When I first started having regular scans, my mind would race with worry. What if they found something? What if the news was bad? The waiting felt endless, and every beep of the machine seemed to echo my fears. I tried everything—deep breathing, distracting myself with music, even counting backward from a hundred. But nothing really helped me feel calm.
Then I discovered one thing that made all the difference: bringing someone with me.
It sounds simple, but it changed everything. Having a friend or family member by my side gave me comfort in ways I didn’t expect. They held my hand when I needed it most and reminded me to breathe when anxiety took over. Sometimes we talked about silly things—movies we wanted to watch or plans for dinner after the appointment—and other times we just sat quietly together.
Their presence made the room feel less cold and clinical. It reminded me that I wasn’t alone in facing whatever came next. Even on days when they couldn’t come inside because of hospital rules, just knowing they were waiting outside gave me strength.
I realized that support doesn’t have to be complicated or dramatic. Sometimes it’s as simple as having someone there who cares about you and understands what you’re going through.
Over time, this became my routine before every scan: call up a loved one and ask them to join me if possible. If not, at least let them know how much their support means over text or phone calls before and after appointments.
This one thing—having someone by your side—got me through every scan better than any technique or distraction ever could have on its own. It turned something scary into something manageable because no matter what happened inside that scanner room, I knew there was always someone rooting for me outside of it too.
And honestly? That made all the difference in how I faced each appointment from then on out—not just surviving them but feeling supported through every step along the way without needing fancy words or complicated strategies; just real human connection right when it mattered most!
